Your Hurricane Window Checklist

We want to give you a checklist to help prepare your home, and more specifically your windows for hurricane season! There are a lot of things you can do to prepare your home for natural disasters, and in many circumstances, your windows can be a weak point in your structure’s survivability. Look into these action items and see which ones work for you.

1. Storm shutters

Storm shutters can be the first line of defense against flying projectiles caused by high-wind events. Reinforcing the outside of your windows with accordion or rollup shutters allow you to add a layer of protection from the outside of your property. Try to opt for metal or reinforced composition shingles as a next step.

2. Installing impact-resistant window glass

The glass you use for your windows can vary in protection from person to person. It’s best to opt for multiple layers, to add in the added stopping power needed to reduce damage from projectiles. There are companies that sell specific hurricane-proof glass windows that come in handy, especially when alternative options like shutters aren’t available.

3. Caulking and sealing your windows

In any circumstance where the area around your windows is leaking, either air or water, that provides an added weakness to your property. Leakage, whether that be holes or simply around the connection points of your window to the frame, provides extra movement for heavy winds to get through the cracks and rip some of the foundation off of your home. Purchasing a caulking gun or tube and running a bit of the material over these areas provides a simple way to reduce your risk.

4. Any other cracks or damages

Finally, if there are any cracks or damages in your windows or even doors, see to it that they get fixed immediately. It may seem self explanatory, but these fixes are crucial in maintaining a solid level of protection for your home.
